From the outset, there were two key objectives in the project brief. Estates Facility Services Manager for the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, Sam  Greer, says, “We wanted a wireless solution, which we saw as advantageous in changing lighting controls and lighting strategies, with minimal disruption to the occupants and the daily activities. This was in the interest of improving patient wellbeing.”

During the design phase, the Trust was convinced that the new building should have less of a traditionally clinical feel of hospitals and more that of a welcoming hotel – to make a suitable environment for patients to get better. This meant that such things as the luminaires needed to be inconspicuous in size and with the ability to program appropriate lighting scenes. The system also needed to be highly resilient, meaning that there would be minimal disruptions in a power failure event.

Chris McAnearney of Cundall adds, “The project was highly versatile, with many different areas and with different requirements, so we needed a solution that was easy to use, and with the ability to make necessary adjustments, as per the clients’ wishes.” The Casambi wireless lighting control met all the project scope requirements in functionality, scalability throughout the building, and interoperability between all elements such as switches, sensors, and light fixtures.

A low-risk solution that pushes the boundaries of technology 

Commissioning the lighting control system was done quickly. All of the luminaires are automatically detected on the app and easily paired to the network, with visual programming functionality via tablet, making the process significantly simplified. “A key benefit for us is that all significant lighting manufactures have bought into the Casambi solution, so we don’t need to be tied to a specific, single manufacturer or light fitting,” Sam Greer adds. The Casambi control solution covers all the hospital lighting, namely the bedrooms, nurses’ stations, corridors, plant rooms, offices, and all exterior lightings around the perimeter and the roof.

A particular function that Casambi provides is in the patients’ bedroom, where several sensors monitor such things as “out of bed movement” (alerting nurses if a patient is out of bed) and daylight, which in turn adjusts the lighting accordingly. The bedrooms’ lights can also be controlled from the nurse’s station in such events as an emergency. Additionally, many of the bedrooms’ scenes provide, via a bedside handset, different scenes for such things as reading or watching TV.

“The most exciting part of the design has been technology progress, even within the project timeframe. When we started the design, we designed enclosures for the lighting and sensors, but since then, the Casambi unit’s concept design has become integrated into the sensors,” adds Chris McAnearney.

The electrical contractor Electrio’s main aim was to minimise the wiring and cabling due to the restrictions of a listed building and implement a more flexible lighting control solution.

A Casambi control solution is used throughout the whole building as well as outdoors. One of the main requirements that the client wanted was the ability switch/dim each individual light point but with also the ability to switch all light fixtures off with one click from the main entrance switch. The client can now also log in to any network and adjust the settings to their preferred choice, adjust timers and manually control specific colours and sequences, if so wished.

The iconic restaurant Cibrèo, which has served a gastronomic journey for the Florentine clientele for over 40 years has opened a new presence in the exclusive location of the historic Helvetia & Bristol, inaugurating a new and innovative catering concept.

The interior design, by world-renowned award-winning Italian architect Massimo Adario, is inspired by baroque architecture. The design studio wanted to create a space where tradition and modernity are mixed and the visitor can feel like taking a trip to the past.

“The creative process began by making one important decision: the use of a single color, light blue, to create a homogeneous background that gives importance to the content and not to the container” said architect Massimo Adario.

The design of the furniture is based on the reinterpretation of the different Cibrèo restaurants that the Picchi family has promoted since 1979.

Lighting designer Jordi Moya, from ILM BCN, proposed a lighting design concept where lighting would be integrated within the interior design to highlight textures, reduce glare and achieve a welcoming, holistic experience for the visitor.

The general lighting is produced with some chandeliers that were created by the Massimo Adario studio in an artisan way using beech wood. Inspired by the baroque chandeliers that illuminate the halls of the Corsini Palace, ILM BCN is committed to replacing candlelight with dimmable LED bulbs from the LAES, with a color temperature of 1800K that recreates the old incandescent filament system.

Surrounded by a frosted glass cylinder that hides their direct vision, they offer a subdued and subtle light reminiscent of candlelight, achieving great warmth. The light intensity is regulated individually to achieve the perfect contrast with the light that penetrates through the large exterior windows.

For a modern touch RGBW LEDs from Brillamenti have been installed as well. Through a Casambi lighting control solution, the space is adaptable; from changes in natural light throughout the day to more daring lighting environments for cocktails or events in the evenings.

The main bar and its back cabinets are made with typical Tuscan marble, Giallo di Siena. Tunable white technology is used, where the color temperature changes depending on the time of day, achieving changing tones in the marble. This same lighting solution is used for the details of the sofas that are located in the central area of the space, thus making the intensity of the red velvet oscillate.

The restaurant has an informal, fashionable atmosphere, with young, confident staff and offers an original menu based on highly selected Italian specialties.

Global E-Commerce Experts (GEE) were looking to use smart technology within lighting to better understand how their new warehouse was operating. By analyzing illuminance data in real-time, they sought to unlock the insights needed to drive down energy costs wherever and whenever possible.

To achieve their client’s objectives, Aurora Lighting proposed a combination of LEDs with integrated Casambi nodes for wireless connectivity. With this smart lighting solution, GEE could not only gain analytical intelligence for energy saving but take action too.

With the Casambi app, they can independently implement adjustable lighting – such as daylighting – conforming to localized needs and enabling energy saving through optimized use of light throughout the warehouse. Based on Bluetooth Low Energy – the most popular and reliable low-power radio technology found in all modern smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches today – changes can be made at the touch of a button (to which Andy, the CEO, can attest!).

From the orchestration of isolated lighting scenes and luminaire groupings, they can also use the app to build up a multiple-site network if required. And by getting connected, it becomes possible to expand beyond a single application – lighting control – to other exercises such as motion detection and indoor positioning services.

Aurora Lighting also mentioned that their offer of 0% Finance was available for the project to commence without upfront costs. This suited GEE’s overall plan and allowed them to spend the CAPEX on other business investments.

Aurora Lighting proposed their Kayon Ultra LED Highbays, which come with high rack aisle optics with integrated PIR’s and Casambi technology.
