The Pillows team wanted hotel guests to have a personal experience during their stay quite unlike the standardized experience of a traditional hotel. They wanted to provide seamless hotel services that focused on guests’ specific needs throughout their stay, so they reached out to Tovèrli Lighting & Control Solutions.   

The hotel wanted to be able to allow guests to control the room’s lights and climate and request services through a single, user-friendly panel and also improve staff efficiency. For management, visibility across the property from a central dashboard was essential.

Philips UV-C air disinfection devices, providing schoolchildren, teachers and other staff with an additional layer of protection against viruses and germs. The closed air units provide continuous disinfection of the indoor air, while their unobtrusive design and silent disinfection make them ideal to use while classes are in session.

There is a growing consensus that airborne transmission is a primary infection route of SARS-CoV-2, especially for enclosed spaces with inadequate ventilation or air handling^2,3. To combat infections with conventional air ventilation one would require six or more air changes per hour (ACH) to provide fresh air, control humidity and reduce levels of odor and CO₂. But each air change will only reduce the level of pathogens by 63%. Besides, conventional air ventilation with outdoor air will result in personal discomfort and increase energy usage, especially in areas with cold and hot ambient temperatures.

A very effective way to achieve the needed air cleaning is by introducing UV-C air disinfection luminaires in combination with a basic level of ventilation and indoor climate solutions, such as Philips UV-C luminaires. This way the discomfort of draft, cold or heat can be avoided, while still effectively combatting pathogens in the air.

Referring to the ongoing pandemic, the Bavarian capital has decided to purchase approximately 7,500 Philips UVCA200 mobile air disinfection units to improve air quality in schools, and to ensure school children, teachers and staff can go to school with peace of mind. The delivery of the devices kicked off at the elementary school in Helmholzstraße in Munich. In total, more than 50 mobile Philips UV-C devices will be integrated in over twelve of the school’s classrooms. Thanks to their small wheels and simple connection to conventional power sockets, the devices can be placed anywhere and used flexibly. The addition of the mobile UV-C devices will complement the school’s disinfection strategy.

 “Especially during the flu season, continuous ventilation and disinfection in the classrooms is important. As a modern school, it was clear to us that we also had to investigate on technological options here for the protection of our students and teachers,” school director Manuela Kirschenmann said enthusiastically. “With the mobile units, a practical and effective solution has been found to help keep the air free of germs and viruses without restricting teaching.”

The new Philips UVCA200 mobile air disinfection devices continuously draw air in the room into the device, where it’s disinfected by the UV-C light before the device blows the air back into the room. As the device produces a low noise level when in operation, it silently and effectively provides disinfection without disrupting classes. The device has an intuitive touch display, making control over the device simple. It’s also equipped with a children lock, preventing children inadvertently operating the device.

In 2011, the non-profit arts organization, ILLUMINATE, along with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and world-renowned artist Leo Villareal collaborated to create a stunning living display of light on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The Bay Lights, unveiled in March 2013 and originally intended as a short-term installation, quickly became a local and global “must see” attraction. Before it even went live, it was dubbed by Hemispheres magazine as “the number one thing to see in the world during 2013.”

The living sculpture also instantaneously became a source of pride for the community. It revitalized the waterfront and its economy with local bars and restaurants reporting a 30% increase in business. And, a group of more than 20 independent analysts from leading firms such as McKinsey, Deloitte, Google, Facebook and city agencies unanimously agreed that The Bay Lights boosts the regional economy by more than $100m annually.

With such a broad social and economic impact, there was no question that The Bay Lights should become a permanent feature in the San Francisco skyline. Bridge officials agreed to maintain the lights on an ongoing basis if ILLUMINATE could raise the funds necessary to keep the artwork as a permanent installation.

ILLLUMINATE kicked off a crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds, and along with donations from larger donors, was able to meet the goal. In March 2015, the Bay Lights went dark for 11 months while the previous system was removed and replaced. 

The new system—utilizing 25,000 nodes of Philips eW Flex Compact—was specifically engineered to withstand harsh weather environments like that of the San Francisco Bay area.

Abby Lighting’s company culture revolves around creativity & innovation – all of which influenced the design of their new office. The concept was identified by creating a stylish, modern and premium working area which still would incorporate all the necessary practical elements. The space had to be inspiring for its team and also serve as a state of the art experience center for its clients.

The challenge was to manage the different lighting requirements of their varied customers to be showcased at the same studio. Casambi allowed to create different scenes, lighting levels and colours. Take for e.g. the coffee point which can double up as a party zone with the incorporation of RGB controlled on Casambi-RGB is extensively used by their hospitality consumers to set moods.

The use of sensors coupled with Casambi allowed to adjust different lighting requirements of users and spaces – leading to a 36% saving as compared to a conventional lighitng system without automation. The low cost of wiring and the system itself makes it very attractive at a ROI of less than 2 years.

The lighting is designed in a way that is easy to adapt to individual needs and accentuate zones and work areas. A careful thought has been given keeping both a balance of indirect and direct light sources, as well as a balance between daylight and artificial light. Areas like the entrance area, the meeting points where usually spontaneous talks or short meetings are held, are fitted with luminaires which are visually attractive and technically functional creating a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. With the use of daylight harvesting and sensors the conference room adapts to the lighting of the circadian rhythm. The open plan work stations are provided with individual task lighting allowing adjustment to people’s personal needs and preferences apart from the ambient lighting which persists throughout the open areas.
